Rum, Sultanate of
Seljuk (q.v.) state established in Anatolia (q.v.) after the battle of Mantzikert (q.v.), organized by its first ruler, Suleyman Ibn Kutlumush ca. 1078. Nicaea (q.v.), its first capital, surrendered to the forces of Alexios I Komnenos (q.v.) in 1097, after it was besieged by the army of the First Crusade (q.v.). After this, the capital was moved to Ikonion (q.v.). The sultanate declined in the 13th century, following the appearance of the Mongols in Asia Minor (qq.v.), and it disintegrated in the early 14th century.
